Weather Video of the Week: 2019 #39

This video shows what happens with a dust devil crosses a recently-burned area.

The fire was out when this video was produced, but the ashes were caught up in the dust devil.

Often, I get questions about what colors are possible for tornadoes.  As it turns out, the color of the tornado has to do with the lighting and what is being blown around.  There is some old video of a tornado crashing through a flower shop, turning the funnel pink and red.  The same tornado can be bright white from the well-lit side, and dark black from the poorly-lit side.

The dust devil in this video is proof of this phenomenon.  If it had crossed through the cornfield, it would have been tan, but as it crossed through the ashes, it turned black.

Thank you for reading my post.
