It’s believable anyway.  I can’t verify this video completely, but it makes a good story.

Often, the high current from the lightning boils the water out of the sap, expanding it to many times its volume.  As it does, it causes the tree to explode.

Having said that, there were plenty of trees in Pop-Pop’s woods which had been struck by lightning, and yet lived on.
